Involving students in third-party funded projects

Intellectual property rights (know-how, inventions, software, etc.) which have been created by Bachelor’s or Master’s students themselves, belong to these students. However, such intellectual property rights can often belong to Kiel University and the students together, as a result of the contributions made by the supervisors of these students.

If students are involved in working on a project, in the context of which Kiel University enters into commitments towards a third party (e.g. a company), these students must relinquish their rights to the intellectual property from their project to Kiel University in writing, so that Kiel University can fulfil its obligations to the third party.

The respective head of the project of the institution is responsible for ensuring that the corresponding written agreements are made in time.
